An archive is a collection of data of a certain type. There are archives for pictures, music or for texts. Most archives provide their contents without charge but it is as well not unsual that a certain fee has to be paid to use an archive. This is for example common along with music downloads which in many cases cost a certain amount per downloaded song.
When you download files from an archive you should consider two things. On the one hand you have to be sure to download only from a trustworthy source because once you start using a file on your computer it is possible that it might harm your computer and or get access to it. The second thing is the legal situation. Some archives offer files of which they have neither property nor any licence to do so. Additionally find out which rights the archive would provide to you. Please keep in mind that alone the fact you get access to view a file (like e.g. a picture) that does not automatically grant you the right to download it and/or use it on your purposes. A general rule you should follow is that what you would not do in the real life you also should not do in the Internet.
Beside of this risks archives are a great source of useful files of any kinds.
