Glossary: Harddisk

A harddisk is a device to store data in a computer. As it has the ability to store huge amount of data in a very short time it is part of almost every home or office computer. A drawback of a harddisk is that it is in many cases fixed inside the computer and not made for beeing transported (that would be easier possible with an external harddisk which is not build into the computer but connected to it from the outside).

To transfer data from a harddisk it is therefore copied to a more transportable device such as a disc or an USB stick. Data could also be send towards another computer via a network connection. As a harddisk like any other device might break or otherwise lose data it is important to keep a backup copy of at least the most important files.
